Evaluating The Impact of a Practical Data Structures Workbook Oon Student Performance and Satisfaction

This study evaluates the effectiveness of a specially developed Practical Approach of Data Structures workbook as a learning resource for third-semester Diploma in Information Technology (Digital Technology) students at Politeknik Mersing. Designed by subject lecturers, the workbook aligns closely with the course syllabus and emphasizes hands-on learning through structured exercises on linked lists, queues, trees, and algorithm design. A comparative analysis of academic performance across three semesters revealed a significant improvement in student outcomes, with A+ grades increasing by 14.25% after the workbook’s implementation. Survey data from 165 students further supports its effectiveness, showing high satisfaction with the workbook’s clarity, relevance, and support for both classroom and independent learning. Literature supports these findings, highlighting that well-designed, syllabus-aligned workbooks enhance student engagement, comprehension, and performance in technical subjects. The workbook’s integration into teaching strategies contributed to improved achievement of Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs), particularly among high- and mid-performing students. While the impact on lower-performing students was minimal, the overall results affirm that practical, curriculum-driven resources can significantly enhance learning in information technology education. This study recommends continued use and further development of such materials to support diverse learner needs and improve academic success.
